‘It became totally irrational’

One of the most troubling events of the recent history of the collective — at least for the founders — had been the staff's decision to bring in a union.3 In the midst of what seemed to be interminable discussions about how to restructure the organization, the staff decided that they needed to bring in a union to represent their interests. They no longer had confidence that their problems could be resolved without outside help. It was clear that they did not — or no longer could — view the white founders as being ‘on their side’. The white founders responded to this turn of events with consternation and disbelief. As one put it, ‘[w]e had always been feminists — you know, anti-capitalist and all that — and suddenly we were managers’. The staff's desire to bring in a union was not only frustrating, but many founders found it difficult to see their action as being in ‘good faith’. After all the ‘hours and hours’ they had spent meeting together and talking, trying to create ‘an organization that makes sense’, it felt to many as a ‘betrayal’. As one informant put it:

I mean, I'm not anti-union … (but) the whole thought was that we could really communicate and work out whatever it was, blocks or whatever, and … no, they were going to unionize and it was the only way. They felt that since things were so unclear about the founders and privilege … that that was the only thing they could do. It was beyond discussion. It became totally irrational, I think. … The other thing that made it even more complicated is that everything was also being discussed in racist terms, which is also crazy. So it was like people who knew the collective said, ‘[o]h, it's so frustrating and sad’ … But that was what was going on.
